Barter Buddies

Last night in Bristol, UK, the Barter Buddies community was launched.

The social networking website isn’t exactly generous per say, as bartering works on the principle of exchange rather than selfless giving. Yet, there is something very refreshing in that money never changes hands.

Instead goods and services get advertised online and swapped. It makes use of what you have and don’t need, it recycles and values old possessions. Instead of just moving onto the next bigger better (or smaller and better) item – bartering undermines the capitalist mantra of waste and channels possessions back into use. Very useful I say.

Also when swapping services and goods you can negotiate terms. Wouldn’t it be fun if we get generous and drive a hard bargain – in generosity! How about we give more than we ever get, how about we use it as a resource to find people that need a hand? How about community?
