Woman at Risk
Target Location: Ethiopia
With outside help, young women who've become sex workers can escape a dangerous life.
Carol* had no money and no one to turn to. She lost her parents when
she was 7 years old, and since then each day was a struggle. At
the age of 17, not knowing where to go, she turned to the only option
that seemed available: trading sex for money. She found the
experience deeply humiliating. "I refuse to call it a life," Carol said, recalling her three years as a sex worker in Adwa, Ethiopia. "It was very bad. I have no words to express my bad feelings."
The Woman at Risk centre in Addis Ababa runs a year long
rehabilitation and training project that takes women who want to give
up lives as sex workers. The project is highly successful due to its
analysis, experience, time, flexibility and commitment. W.A.R. even
successfully copes with the drastically high unemployment rate in the
city and the women go onto solid employment after their year.
Many women want to get a place on the 12 month course, but 75% have
to be turned away because of lack of recourses. By buying this gift you
can provide the complete package of care for one woman (and her
children) for 6 months. This will cover all the costs of her residency
including accommodation, food, healthcare, equipment, counseling,
activities, skills training and finding employment. Buy two and you can
provide the complete year course!!
